Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

DEFSEN002 - Operate a sonar system

What evidence can you provide to prove your understanding of each of the following citeria?

Configure sonar system

  1. Confirm sonar system serviceability (daily system operability tests [DSOTs]) and report any faults to supervisor.
  2. Optimise sonar display for operator use.
  3. Optimise system in line with the environmental conditions.
  4. Use environmental tools such as expendable bathythermograph or tactical environment support system.

Compile and maintain a sonar picture

  1. Identify, track and discriminate between sonar contacts by collecting, collating and analysing information.
  2. Collect acoustic information from other sensors/sources.
  3. Report, display and disseminate sonar contact details to stakeholders.
  4. Respond to threats.
  5. Report problems beyond own capability to supervisor.

calculating range predictions

interpreting environmental data

optimising sonar equipment

completing a minimum of ten hours of sonar systems operations, of which a minimum of three hours is contact time on a submerged contact (live or simulated)

working within one’s delegated authority
